Event Description: Louie Gonnie is an acclaimed Navajo Musician. He was born in the Diné (Navajo) Nation at a place called Antelope Springs. Singing by the age of five under the guidance of his father and uncles, he was taught to respect his elders and the healing ways of his people. A major influence in his life was his grandfather, Haastíín Gonnie, a noted medicine man, for his never ending devotion to humanity. It is his teaching that guide Louie on this journey through life. The prayer is his canvas and the songs represent the colors that become his art. Come listen to Louie Gonnie perform sacred Navajo Music on the back patio at Lantern Dancer. Meet Louie's cousin, artist Matthew White, who creates one-of-a-kind jewelry cast in Tufa and set with precious and rare turquoise and coral.Matthew White, was raised on the Navajo Reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico. He was mentored by Oreland Joe, world renowned sculptor and jewelry maker. Oreland introduced Matthew to the art of tufa casting where a design is carved into tufa stone and molten silver poured into the cast. This imparts a unique texture to the jewelry. Raymond C. Yazzie and Aaron Anderson have also mentored this talented artist who is inspired by the Modern designs of Charles Loloma and his contemporary Perry Shorty.
