Event Description: No factor in trail construction is more important than proper drainage, and many sections of good trail are damaged and destroyed by erosion that could have been prevented. ~Construction of Trails Handbook, NPS CCC, 1937 This is field practice and review. We will spend the morning learning and implementing the standards for basic trail maintenance, discuss how efficiency will reduce the amount of time needed on any trail and how good trail maintenance ensures a sustainable trail for the long term. You will be brushing trail corridor and cleaning and constructing drainage structures. Plan to spend the day outside. Dress for the weather conditions. Wear close toed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeve shirt. Bring your day pack with lunch, snacks and water. Don’t forget your favorite pair of work gloves and a hard hat if you have one. This is a field practice instruction and is comprised of four components: * CUSS’ing our Tools * Review Typical Maintenance Problems * Solutions to Proper Brushing of Trails * Cleaning of Drainage Structures Class Size: Limit of 10 – rate includes materials.
